20 Signs Of An Abusive Marriage

February 1986

names have been omitted in this post

**************

It was around one o'clock in the afternoon he stood at her hospital bed... with bitter disappointment and finally he fled… he left and as the hours crept by… afternoon turned into dusk which turned into night. She sat in her hospital bed with their newborn baby girl swaddled in her arms becoming more and more distraught with worry… where was he? Where had he gone? She began calling everyone she could think of to inquire if they knew of his whereabouts. She called his mother as well, worried he had been in some type of accident. She phoned him at home and at work but her calls went unanswered. The night wore on and with it exhaustion came over her… fraught with worry for him. The next morning he showed up… he admitted he was upset the baby wasn't a boy. Three girls later and he was faced with the reality that he wasn't going to have a son to follow in his footsteps… he wouldn't have a son to continue in the family business… his family name wouldn't continue.

20 Signs Of An Abusive Marriage:

1. Your spouse doesn't allow you to work and controls your clothes, hair, etc.
2. You're reliant on your spouse for transportation due to his/her control.
3. Your spouse makes you feel insecure by their actions; they leave for periods of time and cause you undue worry over their safety and whereabouts. They threaten suicide.
4. Your spouse is always "checking in" with you via text/phone and or places a gps tracking device on your car.
5. Your spouse isolates you from your family and friends or doesn't put nearly as much effort into forming a rapport with them as you do with his/her family and it causes a strain in your relationship.
6. Your parent passes away (out of state) and your spouse doesn't permit you to travel to attend the funeral.
7. Your spouse blames you when you don't conceive a baby of the gender they wanted.
8. Your spouse hides their mental health family history from you and continues to deflect even after you discover a whole family line of unstable history.
9. Your spouse expects your marriage to completely revolve around his/her family/parents and their home for holidays/celebrations.
10. Your spouse drops you off at home after giving birth to your baby and drives off without so much as a goodbye.
11. Your spouse projects (accuses you of lying/cheating when you haven't), gas-lights (claims you said/did something or denies they said/did something), stone-walls (won't engage/silent treatment), re-writes history (changes the story of what really happened), or blames (never takes personal responsibility) in any way shape or form.
12. Your spouse is verbally hateful or physically hurts you in any way shape or form.
13. Your social life is severely limited or nonexistent.
14. Your children have little social life and complain their home/lives are much different than classmates.
15. Your spouse is a workaholic.
16. Your spouse pressures you to and/or forces you to do sexual acts you don't want to do.
17. Your spouse uses the tactic of intimidation to shut you down; throwing things, hitting/kicking walls, cussing, screaming, stomping through the house, slamming doors, driving off, etc. Driving like a maniac.
18. Your spouse's conversations primarily revolve around him/her.
19. Your spouse doesn't show empathy toward you especially when you're sick.
20. Your spouse limits all your decision making; he/she gives you a paltry amount of money for spending which equates to just groceries, he/she makes all decisions regarding vacations and home repairs/updates… leaving you with no partnership.

10 Phrases A Narcissistic Sociopath Uses

He's so good.

He's so good at being bad

"I don't care what you think
unless it is about me"
- Kurt Cobain

"Even the best of states
have serious flaws.
The best solution is you take
someone who has
 been identified as a sociopath
and you lock him
 up forever because by definition,
 they are predators.
They will do it again."
- Marc Klaas

"If a sociopath believes a
lie it makes it truth."
- Karen Kirschbaum

If anyone has perfected the art of saying the right things and making you believe that he means them it's a narcissistic sociopath. He is skilled in charm not sincerity… he excels at superficial not substance… he is a man of much nonsense and riddles like a joker or magician but not meaning or truth.

A sociopath has a typical set of phrases he uses as there are always commonalities between them. It's been said so many times in the support groups I belong to that when the members post messages that their Ex has sent them… they could have been sent from anyone's Ex sociopath… as they all appear to speak the same language… astonishingly, it's as if they are all one and the same person… as if they went to the same school and were taught from the same bag of tricks.

When I was dating my Ex, (even a large part of the marriage) for the most part he was doting… he listened… in fact, part of my attraction to him was the fact he listened… something I didn't have from a father who simply talked at me. What I didn't know then is that people of a manipulative nature may very well listen… they may not be what is expected… dismissive… at least in the beginning… as it behooves them to listen to you and listen well. They excel at listening to what you have to say… hanging onto every word… learning all they can about you so they can reel you in… and in this crucial time period offering bits of sage advice, comfort and affirmation. When we date someone who appears to be the picture of care, of kindness and empathy we believe we truly have what were seeing… we take it to heart and don't doubt that what were experiencing is real.

Any of the typical phrases a sociopath uses may not come to the surface until much later on… once you're immersed in a marriage and dependent upon him. It's not until he has you captured in a corner like a defenseless little ladybug does he begin to show his true colors… and for a while he may even dance back and forth between charm and seemingly genuine care and contempt for you… leaving you completely confused and off balance… because you can't figure out where you stand with him… and he knows it.

Often times when were so close to a situation or person we don't have the distance to step back and be objective. It may be difficult for us to not beat ourselves up later down the road upon the full truth revealed… or block out the "What was I thinking?" thoughts going through our head… but we have to forgive ourselves for any blindness that kept us in the wolf's path… this is part of the healing process. It's a mental barrage of "coulda, shoulda, woulda's"… and it can go on forever if allowed. At some point we have to say "What's done is done and it's unfortunately reality" and then begin self care… making a conscious point to be gentle with ourselves, to journal, pamper ourselves, surround ourselves with healthy, supportive friends and family… doing the little things including the big, leaning on God… asking Him for comfort, strength and healing.

Below are phrases that a sociopath typically uses with his target.

10 PHRASES A SOCIOPATH USES:

1. "Trust me" My Ex used this all the time and amusingly even later during the divorce process. What he's really saying is "Please be a sucker and let me trick you once again." Why on earth would you trust someone who has continually lied and cheated that you have proof of? For a sociopath to tell their target "Trust me" after they've shown (perhaps repeatedly) they cannot be trusted is merely laughable.

2. "I love you" He will use this phrase over and over again. Another lie. He will use this with every woman he's with. A sociopath is incapable of love. What he's really telling you is "I love the way you make me feel. Being with you is like a rush for me at this moment."Unfortunately, eventually the rush will wear off and you'll be replaced.

3. "Happy?" or "Happy now?!" Is his little guise of a remark of ensuring he has taken care of your needs or desires but in reality is a dismissive way of telling you "You're a pain in my butt and inconveniencing me big time. Now go away." My Ex used this one all the time and still does with our children.

4. "It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission." Ugh. My Ex used this all the time. Another statement they use to try to justify their actions and believe that whatever recent ordeal they just put you through (or shady business deal) will merely blow over… that by just saying "Sorry!" in their usual dismissive tone that everything will smooth over, consequences will be nil and he will be able to wiggle his way back into your heart.

5."You're so sensitive." A classic. A way to justify his negative actions or verbal abuse toward you when you naturally get upset or mad. Then you begin to question yourself and your own feelings. What eventually happens is later on (even perhaps after you're divorced) it strips you of confidence and you begin to question every interaction you have with people… the natural response is a phase of being unsure… the good news is your confidence will return as you heal and become stronger. Keep in touch with friends that know and love you and don't allow yourself to become isolated.

6. "I can never make you happy. My God! You are so negative! Why do you think I'm never around? Because I can't stand being around you!" Justification and twisting for why he's cheating or a workaholic.

7. "What about you? What about your issues?" This is his comeback to you when you call him on the unacceptable choices he's made. He will spin it back onto you and try to bring up any faults or flaws you have (or make any up) to get the heat off him.

8. "I could do that for you." Could. Interesting. He could, but chooses not to. He could do that Honey-do on your list that you really need finished but he won't.

9. "I only get this negativity from you." In other words…. he isn't getting what he wants so it's easier to attack you.

10. "The more you tell me one thing the more it makes me want to do the opposite." Oh, okay… it's comparable to a three year old boy having a fit. He doesn't wanna just cause you want him to so he ain't gonna!

The Sociopath: 6 Tricks He Uses

Emily Thorne/ Revenge:

[opening voiceover]

"Doubt is a disease. It infects the mind, creating a mistrust of people's motives and of one's own perceptions. Doubt has the ability to call into question everything you've ever believed about someone, and reinforce the darkest suspicions of our inner circles."

The Sociopath.

Maybe he's next door.

Maybe he's your brother or father.

Maybe he's your husband.

The sociopath creates doubt everywhere he goes. Doubt creeps in like an invisible toxic poison filtering into the deepest, darkest depths of our minds, making us begin to believe what's not even real. Doubt is given in merely a calculated statement about you veiled in the facade of the outward innocence he portrays to others.

Doubt is what you see in others eyes staring you down minutes into a conversation and you realize he's already gotten to them... like a body snatcher he's infiltrated their brain by spewing his smear campaign of lies about you to them... and they swallowed it like a warped little pill.

Doubt made you begin to question your own reality because what you said and did or didn't in the weeks leading up to the demise of your marriage he denied you ever saying, he contradicted... you began to feel like you were living in a cloudy world where perceptions aren't clear, thoughts are foggy... not realizing your words were being manipulatively altered... that you were being gaslighted by him and you actually silently began to question if he was drugging you.

Doubt makes you begin to question every man, his true intentions and what escapes his mouth because you've lived in the confines of lies from your ex for so long... doubt can keep you from being vulnerable, willing to try again... wiling to put yourself out there... because doubt doesn't just go away... it stays and you have to fight it every day... to not let it grow and become an unmanageable weed. Doubt has to be pruned daily and kept in check... or else it takes over and steals any probable chance at joy you could have.

He had dark hair, handsome Italian looks and a strong presence. We talked for hours... topics like writing, literature, history, art... we laughed like two school children at recess. He took note of my once freshly ironed white dress shirt now slightly wrinkled from that day... errands and the warm afternoon sun had left me rolling back my shirt sleeves and his inky eyes twinkled at me in the fading horizon now, gesturing toward my knee high brown boots, as he spoke...

"Women today... you all dress like you're in an Indiana Jones movie." He observed with an amused smile and I laughed, not really having looked at it like that.

"You know... I'm your anti-husband. I'd bet I'm everything he wasn't." He told me.

Doubt kicked in like a quick reflex... like when the doctor thumps your elbow or knee.

My eyes narrowed and I slipped my sunglasses on to peer at him appraisingly. The laughter faded from my lips, I stepped back, and thought to myself...

Really? …  Let me be the one who decides that. Because the very fact you said it tells me you feel the need to prove you're not... at least for awhile, right? For awhile until I've fallen for the facade and then the real you will spill out... like a glass of cool milk concealing hidden Tabasco... hot, painful and capable of burning you through and through. No.... I'll decide.... and although one portion of me wants to give you the benefit of the doubt another screams to doubt you and any words you utter from here out.

How does a Sociopath manage to trick you?
How does he manage to cling himself to you like a static thread to your sweater?
How does he manage to foil your gut instincts and ingratiate himself into your heart and life?

6 Tricks The Sociopath Uses:

1. He makes promises... promises, promises. He will promise he will never hurt you. When my ex and I were dating this was something he said over and over again. When I finally opened up about my past which required inordinate patience and time on his part... he was the doting listener, the hand holder, the one who kissed my forehead and promised, promised he would never ever hurt me. Lie. Lie. Lie. If a man tells you this... run and don't look back.

2. He creates a sense of team membership. Suddenly you're in a club of exclusivity. Of two. Just you and him. You may think that's cozy but it's his underhanded way of ingratiating himself into your life and making you falsely believe without any commitment spoken by him it's you and him against the world. He uses language that ties you together... unites you... like "We should go in now", "Let's see how we can fix this", "We should go see that movie"... etc, versus "I should get going", "I can try to fix it if you'd like", "Would you like to go see that movie?"

3. He makes assumptions you feel the need to prove wrong. "I bet you think you're too good to go out with me", "A guy like me could never get a girl like you", "You intimidate me". He wants you to prove otherwise, he wants to pull you in, take the challenge and have you grin back flirtatiously and respond with "Oh yeah? Well, let's see about that." That's playing with fire. Run. Don't look back.

4. Rejecting your boundaries. You tell him you don't need any help and yet he insists. You tell him you don't date anyone five years older than you and yet he persists pursuing you. Stick to your beliefs. It's your life. Don't waver.

5. He lies and lies again. Anytime you catch someone lying during your dating relationship it's best to dump them and move on. If it's a pattern of behavior definitely move on... patterns always mean more than words spoken no matter how sweet. If he's hidden the fact he has huge amounts of credit card debt from you... should you be surprised if he then does unethical things at work? Will you be surprised to find out he lied on his taxes or didn't even do them? Would you be surprised to find out he cheats in more than one way? When you see something or suspect something that doesn't seem right, trust your gut instinct.

6. He believes you "owe him". Whether it's a favor he wants, more time, more this or that... whether it's sex, a massage or whatever else he can dream up... you don't "owe" him anything. Tell him you're "Even Steven", you "Don't do deals" and get as far away from him as possible.

Common Phrases Spoken By (and signs of) A Narcissistic Sociopath

"They said you was high-class…

that was just a lie."

 - Elvis

High-class…. respectable... honest… hardworking… some parents may be viewed in this sense by others but sometimes the percieved view is completely wrong… indeed, the narcissistic sociopathic parent is capable of appearing quite the opposite of what they truly are underneath the mask they wear.

People in general often think "You married a Narcissist? What? How is that possible? They appear perfectly nice and normal to me." or they may think... "Your dad is a sociopath? Not possible! A sociopath is a cold blooded killer… not some everyday-looking-Joe."

But there is a wide spectrum when it comes to personality disorders… there are subtle traits and then the far extreme committing violent crimes… but typically most narcissistic sociopaths are your everyday working men… in jobs as businessmen… maybe they own their own business and make money under the table… maybe they are entrepreneurs, maybe they are attorneys or work on wall street… but all of them are looking out for one person and one person alone… themselves.

They are not caring people… they lack empathy. They do not love their children. Their children are possessions… and if divorced they use their children as pawns in a plan of vengeance. If married they still use their children… as their children are an extension of their ego… they need their children to satisfy their life goals and dreams in order to gain additional supply where the supply they gain leaves off from their spouse. There is always additional supply to pursue to feed their hungry egos and using people is how they do this. Sociopaths are comparable to emotional vampires… they suck you dry until you have nothing left. Then they move on to their next prey.

"Say Whaaaaat?"

There are certain phrases they use and it's good to familiarize yourself with them. They tend to be repetitive…. when they do talk it's usually much about nothing… think of a dog running in circles chasing it's tail… that's comparable to having a conversation with a narcissistic sociopath. You walk away not having an in depth conversation, as it's a whirlwind of mumbo jumbo that spews from their lips leaving you further confused as to what just transpired.

Common phrases of a Narcissist Parent or Ex:

1. "I am an enigma." When my ex told me this a few years ago I thought it was odd but now looking back it speaks volumes about him.
2. "You think you are so smart! Let's see you figure it out!" Smug superiority.
3. "I don't know what you're talking about." Actually, yes he does… he's gas lighting you. Sociopaths excel at this. And from personal experience… once you educate yourself on gas lighting… and turn the tables and do it to them when they need something from you (in a very calm tone) it will nearly send them over the edge with frustration and they will lash out. Be careful doing this and don't if their prone to violence.
4. "There is nobody that will love you as much as I do!" Keeps you down.
5. "Maybe you need to check the bible… that part about honoring your parent!" What they fail to own up to is how incredibly abusive they are.
6. "Children should be seen, not heard." Classic one. Controller.
7. "I never said that." When in reality he's twisting and lying; he really did. More gas lighting; wants you to doubt yourself and reality. Classic sociopath behavior.
8. "Watch me! I can do whatever I want! You tell me not to, I will all the more!" Immature and comparable to a three year old boy having a temper fit.
9. "I thought we were going to have this big family! And it's fallen apart!" Behaving like the victim which they love to do to reel you back in and gain sympathy. When in reality they were the constructor of the destruction and reason for the fall out. Takes zero responsibility.
10. "This is all your fault! You can't be good!" Blames. Scapegoats his child for all the issues in the family.

Signs of a Narcissistic Parent:

1. Belittles the child's needs, feelings or ignores them outright. "No, you're fine. Stop it."
2. Uses the child to propel forward in life… whether it be for their beauty, smarts or talent… they will use their child in some way to build themselves up. They project onto the child what they wish them to be… following in their footsteps as a doctor, a rancher, an attorney, etc.
3. Self-centered… everything is about them… what they want to do, where they want to go on vacation, what they want to eat, what they want to watch etc.
4. Either controls with an iron clad fist or neglects their children… or alternates between the two… creating even more confusion and chaos; their child is always wondering exactly where they stand.
5. Takes credit for anything their child does well; achievements, talent, education, job, etc.
6. Loves babies, preschool age and up to about kindergarten age children. Because at these ages they have a captive audience and adoration; supply. But once past this age (latest first grade) they no longer know what to do with them and pull away leaving the child feeling confused and wondering if they did something wrong.
7. They may go through the basic motions of caring for their children if and when needed (like when the other parent is out of town, sick or in the case of divorce during their possession time) but never have the emotional connection needed to have a healthy relationship with their child.
8. Asking them questions or voicing opposition is a big no… they don't answer to anyone and least of all explain themselves to a child. This brings condemnation, yelling, rage and lashing out.
9. The older the child the more at risk they are for being abused because the parent sees them as a threat; they are becoming their own person with ideas and thoughts.
10. As the child grows a bit older (teen years) they begin to see their parent as mean, grouchy, cold, manipulative, a liar, a cheat, dishonest, two faced, cunning, selfish, child-like, a bully, vindictive, crazy, etc.

a short word about
The Court System/Divorce/Child Custody:

The family court systems quite frankly for lack of a better word suck as they have no idea the extent of the damage sociopathic parents can do to their children. Judges, attorneys and yes, even the Ad Litem's are not typically schooled enough in psychology regarding narcissists, sociopaths, personality disordered individuals, which needs to change. They are typically so snowed by the cunning facade of the sociopathic parent they merely see a respectable good natured man standing before them in the courtroom… and the parent who is accusing them of being a sociopath will inevitably be viewed as the nut job… which in turn makes for an even more frustrating case for the caring, loving, emotionally healthy parent. It tends to make them more defensive, more attacking and ultimately everything that they truly aren't. A sociopath has the capability of bringing out the ugliest, darkest side of a normal healthy person… driving them to insanity, as they know exactly where to poke and pull the strings like on a puppet. If and when someone tells their attorney that their ex is a sociopath more than likely they will be met with an "Uh huh…", a dismissive nod, an appreciative laugh or even outright ignoring you… because so many people run into their attorney's office during their divorce proclaiming "My ex is absolutely crazy!!!" that many attorney's honestly don't believe them when in reality it may very well be true.

A sociopath does not co-parent…

they do the opposite of what you do on purpose.

***********************

People tend to tell the victim:
"And yet you stayed… so what's wrong with you?"
They fail to understand that when married to a sociopath
you are under their insidious hypnotic manipulation.
You no longer know what's real
and what's not because the sociopath twists reality.
One minute you have an adoring
husband and the next he is discarding you.

Shame on people for blaming the victim.

It can feel isolating to have had a parent who is a narcissistic sociopath or to have been married to one, because so few people see it or even understand it. But once you realize what you've been through is zero reflection of you but instead that the sociopath is the unhealthy one… you can find affirmation, healing, peace…. and victory!

There is a new chapter, a new life waiting for you filled with people are genuine, compassionate and kind.

Have faith that you will prosper!

Is He A Sociopath? - 20 Signs

The Sociopath

You may be wondering if he's a sociopath and what makes up one.

Here is a list of 20 signs to help….  (For men: Is She A Sociopath? 20 Signs)

1. You are walking on eggshells… you feel on edge around him and yet strangely enough you want to be his one and only. Yes, it's sick. This is not normal.

2. He originally placed you on a pedestal and was in awe of you. Now, later, it's like you are in this weird dance where he waffles between placing you on the pedestal and treating you like you are disposable. It creates confusion instead of peace.

3. He refers to you as his trophy wife and bases your value on how good you make him look. He expects affirmation he's done well in life at his 20 year high school reunion based on your looks and you on his arm. When no one validates him, this is when you unknowingly enter the discarding stage by him.

4. In the beginning he wanted to seal the deal quickly and marry you speedy quick. He doesn't want a long engagement, he gives ultimatums, sets the wedding date and if you waver…. he accuses you of being not committed.

5. You catch him in a lie. And another lie. And another. It's pathological for him and he won't stop. He accuses you of being a liar or a cheater. That's called projection; him twisting what he's doing onto you.

6. Nothing phases him. He drives like a maniac to intimidate you. Or you're in the car with him and nearly get hit by another car. Anyone else would flinch, grip their hand rest, something. Not him. He's cool as a cucumber and never feels fear, anxiety or worry. No, that's not normal.

7. Appears needy but is actually controlling. Texts you incessantly. Initially you may see it as flattery, as lovely attention, but eventually down the road you will feel suffocated because he's in fact controlling.

8. Sex addict. He craves stimulation and high risk. He may use you for his main source of supply but needs supply from others too. Likely a cheater. He will put you at risk for STD'S. Get tested.

9. Views women as inferior. His friend may likely be a narcissist, maybe even a sociopath.... has had sex with hundreds of women then discards them. He texts him nude photos of the women he's slept with and when you discover it and confront him… he makes excuses. You are disgusted by him and for good reason.

10. Mocks you, stone-walls (gives you the silent treatment). You feel voiceless and exasperated. In a normal relationship you feel heard.

11. He is loved by those around him who know him superficially like his co-workers and employees. They believe you are the issue after you discover what he is because he has skillfully and cunningly painted himself to be this great, respectable, all around decent human being. He gives them shallow praise and they eat it up while he uses them in some way gaining supply.

12. He ignores you. When you ask him "Why are you treating me this way?' you will be met by a blank stare. He walks away. Your feelings chronically feel unimportant.

13. He demands respect from you. He desires you to adore him and follow him. And yet as time goes on you are a big inconvenience to him. He voices complaint he has to provide for you "Why can't you go get a job?" and "You expect me to do everything" when in reality you've been standing on your head like a three ring circus act doing everything except wiping his butt. You feel like a hundred years old and don't recognize yourself in the mirror.

14. He expects that you better be perfect. You better work like a dog but look like a Victoria's Secret model doing it. His expectations are sky high and you can never live up to them. Don't even try, it will kill you trying.

15. The relationship doesn't feel secure. In normal secure loving relationships there isn't worry that one little spat is going to be the end of a couple… but with him, yes. You find yourself always being the one to give in, to compromise, to apologize… because there is this unspoken feeling that if you don't he will toss you aside. Don't accept this as a way to live.

16. Gas-lights you. Claims you said something you never said or alternatively tells you something in anger "Stop talking to me about God!" and then a few weeks later denies "I never said that", 'I don't know what you're talking about" ever saying it. In the beginning it will be he said/she said type scenarios. Later, it will be items (books, etc) moved in the house and he claiming you did it when you didn't. Yes, you begin to question yourself and wonder if you're going crazy. That's his plan. Get yourself a plan… walk away from him and his bag of crazy.

17. Comments on your looks and other women's. Constantly critiques how you could improve your hair, your outfit, etc. Who cares what he thinks? Why put value in it?

18. His idols are status, image and money. He has to have the big house, keep up with the neighbors and drive the expensive car. Post divorce he buys himself a second vehicle and takes his newest sex supply to New York, the trip he always promised you. He gains new supply from her and materialism. Take your own trip to New York. Why ruin it with a case of crazy?

19. He uses the children as pawns when and after you divorce. He uses them to punish you, to turn one or all of them against you. Because who exactly do you think you are to leave him after discovering he cheated? He does the discarding, no one else.

20. You don't recognize him as the same person you first met. Because that person never really existed. That was a facade, a trick, a phony. He could only wear the mask for so long before it crumbled off. Now you know what he is. Run. And don't look back.

Change: Better Alone Than Married To The Devil

I sat beside her listening to her talk about him. About how he had romanced her, treated her to candle lit dinners with white tablecloths, wooed her, spoken words of wit and wisdom... saying all the right things as if scripted from a how to guide. He had pursued her with fierce prowess like a hunter after the prized and lovely creature he knew her to be.

It all began coming to an end one moment at a time leading up to the final day he would discard her.

The first moments it began unraveling was when she voiced dislike over something he did... the first time when she disagreed with the choices he made... the first time he didn't believe she was profusing total adoration of him, the first time she wavered on respect for him....

It all began unraveling after being legally bound to him in the institution of marriage....  when you find yourself in bed with the devil he gives marriage a bad name. He knew all her weak spots from careful observation... from being the facade of an attentive listener, a caring man. Unbeknownst to her he would one day delightedly enjoy using her weaknesses against her instead of being a soft place to land.

It was in tiny snapshots that he became different. It was such a slow decline... such a slow conflicting dance of kindness and cruelty he continually spun her in... eventually she began to question her own sanity. He had the ability to shower her with nice things.... gifts, dinners, take-out, plays, wonderful experiences, listening to all of her troubles and woes, ready to help in any way possible.... yes, he would treat her so well and then stop the carousel they rode, abruptly hauling her off and twisting her words, attacking her skills, questioning why exactly she wasn't doing this or that... why isn't x,y,z being done this way?... meaning his way instead of her way.... because her way is stupid he implies and as she stands there stunned wondering where he, where the man she loves went and who this freaking one man circus act is.... before she can even collect her thoughts because she's now so off kilter, he grips her in an embrace and throws her back on the carousel of seemingly doting love as her anger simmers in a state of indignant exasperated voiceless shock.

I nodded.

I knew all this and more.

I knew about the gas-lighting... how he'd say she said something (or didn't) two weeks ago that she knew with every fiber of her being she did. not. say. and yet he stood so tall and self assured (while she witheringly protested) looking her in the eye with outward cool and inward amusement mixed with contempt. I knew how if she tried to address an issue that needed to be discussed he'd merely move on with a brisk "That's in the past! Let's move on!" as she stood there in bewildered perplexity thinking to herself but.... your idea of "in the past" is literally two minutes ago! I'm trying to have a conversation here! I knew that and oh so much more.

I knew her pain, her anger, her injustice, her feeling of being tricked, of being mad at him, the rage within, yet furious at herself for being taken. I knew her regret, how she wished she could start again, how she had perhaps missed out on someone great because she was wasting time on someone so despicable... how now she looked at everyone she had dated as a possible monster because she had caught his eye... and now how it was so unreal that his own mother could look you in the eye while enabling his contemptuous behavior he wielded for years over you and yet you see him do it to her and she enables him like a mute blind deaf woman by foolish choice.

I knew it all.

"I'm so sorry." I tell her "No one should have to go through this. No one should have to live like that, to endure that. It's abusive, sick and evil and once you're out of it you look back with eyes wide open, with objectivity, with clear lenses and wonder how on earth you survived it. But you did."

She proceeded to tell me how the absolute worst of it to her was that she was no longer the person she was before him. She was no longer soft and trusting but hardened. She was suspicious of everyone and certainly any man who did anything nice for her. It was a constant battle within to not be suspicious of any man's intentions however wonderful. She hated it and deep down....

I knew this too. And I hated it.

Tears sprang to my eyes and wet my heart for her.... it wasn't right.

Not. One. Bit. Of. It.

"You aren't a fool... " I whispered because I knew otherwise my voice would crack from emotion.... "You're brave. You didn't know. You didn't know he was a monster. You didn't know and no one that knows him likely knows what he's really like. Likely they think he's this wonderfully charming kind man. He does nice things for people to gain narcissitic supply and always expects something in return. Don't beat yourself up. We have a chance to start fresh, to heal and eventually maybe find someone who has a heart that's pure. A man whose after God." I told her....

She nodded sadly and I spoke....

"You know, it's rampant. I think to myself how yet another woman has been chipped away bit by bit by a man like this and it breaks my heart. It saddens me beyond belief that this is where the world is.... not headed... but where it's at. Changes must be made..... we as women need to demand it. Change begins with boys. It begins with dads. It begins with humility, love for others versus a love of self and above all a love for God."

                *********************

I scroll through Facebook...

seeing fleeting glimpses of political posts, humor infused posts, posts on stocks and the financial state of America's debt.... I see posts on what foods to eat to prevent cancer and the delightfully silly faces of children on outings to the park with their parents.... I see smiling faces of couples celebrating their ten year wedding anniversaries and candid snapshots commemorating date night.... I see couples happy behind the lens of the camera and wonder of their reality behind closed doors...

Because
what
is
posted
is
not
always
truth.

I see husbands on trips in the name of work and wonder why their wife is not in the photo.... their husband is seeing the glittering endless jewels the world has to offer and yet there he stands before them with his arm empty. Yes, we can't always be with our spouse due to other commitments like work.... but yet commitments are breakable. A convenant isn't to be compromised. When I see a continual pattern of husbands posting photos away from home without their beloved on their arm I question..... I wonder and I know with definitive certainty what I don't want that ultimately translates to what I do want.

As women we want truth.
We want real.
We want authenticity.

We want Godly.

I want a man who loves God more than anyone in the world.

I want to purposefully love a man each and every day.

I want a man who would die for me not dominate me.

I want to see the world with the man I love, to enjoy each other's company on all corners of the earth.

I want us to be drunk on humility and loving others and thankful for God's goodness.

A narcissitic sociopath can try to fool you all day long by going to church but he is self serving to his core.... he doesn't have a heart of thankfulness. He has a heart that beats "Me!, Me!, Me!"

We bear beautiful fruit that has a never ending effect when we marry a man who is more like God and less like the world. Better to be alone than with the devil. It's only with a Godly man that we can raise boys to be like Him too instead of a self serving narcissitic sociopath who just breeds more of the same destruction for yet another generation to endure.

That begins with change.

That begins with us.

When No One Believes He Is A Narcissistic/Sociopathic Person

Narcissist.

She's your best friend.

He's your dad.

He's your now ex-husband.

When we realize that one of the significant people in our life exhibits narcissistic/sociopathic behavior, and we are/were their prey, that realization can lead to a varying range of emotions. Some of the things you may find yourself dealing with are confusion, stress, (perhaps long term) anger (at the person and possibly yourself for being duped for however long) sadness, and questioning how this happened to you to begin with.

If you were raised by someone who is a narcissist... if you were healthy and realized the destruction the parent was constructing... you are then at a higher risk later to marry a narcissist and or have a friend who is one. The reason for this being is we automatically go to "what we know" and if your mom or dad is a narcissist you may very well be dealing with one later in life. If you are the type who will question, doubt and ask yourself internally:

"Am I a narcissist? Am I like that? Because I don't want to be! I fear being that! I abhor that!"

Then rest easy. Because more than likely you aren't a narcissist. A narcissist doesn't have self reflection to ask those critical questions of themselves, of their behavior, because they are all about self preservation... they are all about painting a facade of perfection and they are their own biggest fans.

I truly believe the worst aspect of dealing with a narcissist (and there are plenty, take your pick) is after enduring their craziness for however long... in some cases years on end.... is no one believes you when you try to explain that your dad or husband or ex or ex-friend is a narcissist. People are looking at the person at face value... they see a bright, friendly, likely outgoing person whom you are saying is a narcissist. They don't see it nor believe it for a second. In fact, as you rattle on about some of the ways they've behaved over the years you see doubt staring back at you in the form of growing silence, stiffening body language and replies like "Well, I just can't imagine that... I mean, he/she has always been so nice to me!"

As you stand there you may begin to doubt yourself (which is one of the cunning purposeful tactics of a narcissist) and second guess, wondering once again if you have your facts straight. But here's the truth:

You do have your facts straight.

You may begin to feel anger and defensiveness rising up in you because suddenly everything you've been through... the abuse at the hands of a narcissistic parent as a child, the abuse of a narcissistic ex spouse, or whether it's the abuse of a narcissistic friend... has supposedly according to this person standing before you not ever really happened... yet it did really happen. Deep down you know this to be true but it's when seeing others speak of the narcissistic person with praise, adulation and even reverence you pause if even for a split second, having a fleeting moment of doubt within.

But this is a common reality for people who have dealt with narcissist's firsthand. I promise you it's real. You didn't dream it up. You didn't invent it. It really happened and it was/is reality.

A few months ago I was out shopping when I ran into a woman who has known my dad for many years through business.  After chatting a moment she invariably asked "How's your dad?" I replied I didn't know but from what I heard through the grapevine he's fine. She came back with "I just love your dad!"

Awkward silence ensued.

Images of him having fits of rage while growing up, breaking things, glass flying, mugs flying, his fist going into walls while I listened to his raging cuss-a-thon from my bedroom, twisting and turning everything I said, denying any wrong doing, the worshipping of a pristine image of himself in the eyes of the community, making money under the table, always playing the martyr, the victim... generously doling out heaps of guilt to use as a form of control, the ugliness he displayed behind closed doors, the plain ugly things he'd say... it all flashed before me, washing over me, sweeping my shoulders and making me so so so incredibly tired this scenario was now playing out yet again... that here stood yet another person he knew through business that was charmed and blind to the real him behind closed doors. That once again I was being told what a simply wonderful human being he was and the adorement for him was radiating in their eyes at me.

"Everyone says that." I tell her stiffly and although my words could be viewed as affirmation, instead through detected tone and body language the truth is I'm saying anything but that without saying much at all. She catches the difference and carefully scrutinizes me for a moment then abruptly says she must get going. I nod and with goodbyes we part... once again I'm reminded of how powerful the narcissist is.... they've constructed such a careful facade for so many years in their social or business circles of being respectable, honest, friendly, etc that no one will believe for a second it's them and not you.

It's a battle not worth fighting.

Because it will drain you dry and leave you feeling even more powerless than what you've already experienced at the hands of the narcissist. Don't beat yourself up... drop the invisible bat and realize that you may have been duped by a narcissist or endured significant sociopathic abuse at their hands but it doesn't define you.

You aren't "stupid" or "dumb" etc for falling for their lies, their confusion, gas lighting, crazy making, delusions and sociopathic behavior... you were an innocent, good person they knowingly took advantage of and treated miserably. You can stand in victory knowing you survived it and came out on the other side...

even if you stand

 alone.

When A Sociopath Meets A Nice Person

"NICE PERSON"

Imagine having that plastered on your forehead and everyone who would love to take advantage of you immediately knowing you were a viable target, a person whom they could calculatingly pounce on and take hostage mentally, emotionally, psychologically, financially, physically, etc.

But what if you didn't need a sign like that stuck to your forehead? What if those calculating people could just sniff you out like a dog who can detect the next kill during a hunting expedition?

This is the agenda of a sociopath.

To hunt you down and capture you. And they know you are a prime target because you are so good. So honest, so trusting, so reliable and so sweet. It's like you have a sign on your head directing them to you. Unfortunately sociopath's don't come with signs on their forehead but there are some things we can do to look out for ourselves and detangle ourselves from them. We can protect ourselves by being aware of what traits make up a sociopath and how to handle them if we find ourselves in their path of destruction.

Let me guess....

He was charming, he said all the right things. He made himself appear to be the golden boy and you believed it. You believed him when he said he would never hurt you and he was crazy about you. The only problem is.... later you catch him in a lie. Then another lie. Then another.

He won't stop lying. Because lying to him is like the air he breathes. It will continue and will be pathological. He always has an answer. He seems to know what to do about anything and everything and will always come to your aid to help "fix" whatever needs fixing.

He has an enormous ego that is insatiable and he cannot feed it enough to keep it satisfied. He will appear to be the smartest, wealthiest and most successful man in the room.  He declares his love for you and wants to seal the deal quickly. These are the men who typically want to marry quickly and swoop in speedy quick to make you his bride because he has found someone sweet, naive and "so good" that will luckily for him fall for all his pathological lies.

He is likely pursuing you so much you mistakenly take it for flattery and revel in the initial over the top texts, emails, cards, phone calls, etc... but one day you will come see them for what they are... a mask of control and eventually one day when you receive one of his millionth texts it will send you cringing and wanting to run to the nearest escape exit.

He wins. When you begin to voice any opposition to his behavior he always wins. That's what he does. His reasonable logic will always outshine your emotional quivering or attempts at explaining your feelings or point. Your reasoning is emotional whereas his is collected, cool and calm which makes you begin to look stupid, inadequate and unstable. This is what he desires. It gives him power. And makes you appear weak.

He is never ever wrong. Ever. It is always you. If you parked your car in a spot and someone hit it, "There must be something YOU did" and "It must be your fault. Because clearly you don't know what you're doing". His behavior wasn't always like this toward you.... but over time it changed. Initially it was aimed at others but he turned on you somewhere along the road... and one day it will be not only aimed at you but any children you have together. Or he might choose one to be his golden child to feed his narcissistic supply and the other child will become the black sheep. Completely disposable ... likely because this child sees him for the monster he really is so that particular child does him zero good. He will continue to dote on his precious golden child.... at least until he no longer needs he or she and then they will be dismissed too and replaced with a brand new narcissistic supply to feed his ego.

He will never be sorry for how he's treated you. He's not capable of being sorry, feeling remorse, empathy etc. He is devoid of all feeling, love, generosity etc. If you are nice to him he merely laughs to himself and thinks "Stupid fool!". He will never take any blame for his behavior and will always twist the truth to spin it back to be your fault. He excels at spinning a web of deceit and construing a mask of the polar opposite of who he really is beneath the surface. To others he cunningly crafts a facade of positivity, humor and the all around good guy. Sociopath's don't feel love, compassion or empathy. His greatest fear is being outed publicly. Behind closed doors is a man who is so insecure, so broken, so sick that he hurts those closet to him with dismissiveness, stone-walling, gas lighting and fits of rage.

His very core is criminal and he doesn't hold a moral compass. He lies, evades taxes, he drinks and drives, he doesn't pay his bills, he restructures his job title and pay to evade child support, he uses his company to hide assets and make purchases, he propositions women for sex, he has sex with prostitutes, he has affairs, he lives beyond his means, he makes money under the table, he speeds putting his children at risk, he does drugs, he gambles, and acts entitled because he deserves to "be happy" at the expense of everyone around him. He is all about himself.

He is an over-inflated walking ego high on crack.... that is the summation of a narcissist... a narcissist who has reached this level of extreme destruction has become a sociopath.

It's only a matter of time before he turns on you. At some point he will completely reveal himself to you and then he will no longer have your respect. Then he will gladly begin actively treating you with cruelty. He will criticize and ridicule you.... seeing you not with love but with the contempt he feels for you... for now you see him for what he is..... a monster. And there is no going back now.

By now you undoubtedly feel desperate. Desperate to make him see the light. To make him see what he's throwing away... two words.... just stop. Walk. Away. It's a losing battle. He will not change. You can't reason with unreasonable. You have done so much for him, given yourself to him and yet he has now disregarded you, your love for him and all your wonderful qualities like yesterday's dirty worn out newspaper. He has already moved on, rejecting you and searching for a new supply to feed his hungry ego. Hold your head up and realize that you aren't giving up by walking away but you ARE walking to healthy.... to whole... to love... to healing.

You deserve a love that's not tainted with love of self.... but instead a love for others.

So how do you react to a sociopath?

These steps may seem harsh, but you are dealing with someone who is not mentally healthy. The most important thing for you to do is begin healing after being exposed to them and by doing these things you can begin that process.  This is about your survival so you can then thrive!

1. Ignore them. This is their greatest fear. If it's possible to have zero contact then cut off all communication. Change your number if it's an ex spouse.

2. Avoid eye contact. Every time you look at them you feed their supply and their wrongly perceived adoration of them.

3. Don't answer his phone calls. Screen his calls via voicemail.

4. If you must have contact via phone keep silent after he speaks. He will be shocked by your inattention to his every word. Stay silent on the line until he has to confirm you are still there by asking "hello?" Keep your responses minimal to one or two word answers.

5. Don't sign or agree to anything that could land you in court. Keep all answers non committal.

6. If you give him an inch he will take a mile. He will say "Well, you let me!" When negotiating stand firm in what you want. Don't waver, for he sees it as a sign of weakness and stupidity.

7. Don't be sucked back in by glimpses of his niceness. It's a facade. Sociopath's "don't do anything just to be nice." Him being nice is a red warning flag that he's about to pounce on you mercilessly.

8. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. If he's a sociopath then more than likely his mother or father is too. Look for patterns of behavior. If one parent is hung up on ego, status and image more than likely they are the one who he is patterning after.

9. Losing control terrifies them. Losing you means they have been rejected and losing you also means losing money, assets, and possibly his children or less influence over them. Divorcing him is the greatest insult to his fragile ego. This requires punishing you on his part.

10. Keep the motto "I'm collecting not giving" in terms of information during a court case, custody battle, etc. Keep information you have on them close to the vest and keep them guessing as to what you know. Eventually you can spring it on them and unmask what they've done in court.

11. They use their children as pawns in the divorce process and will go to any lengths to "win" even if it means bribing their children with toys, candy and clothes etc. His children are completely disposable to him and yet he needs them to punish you with parental alienation. He may think he's bought the children off but children are incredibly sharp and will always go back to the parent whom they view as their "safe place". You can't bad mouth him to your children regarding his lies, his cheating, his inadequate parenting and immoral character. Yet you can point out people in the media that have committed similar acts as lying, cheating and immoral behavior to show that there are indeed always consequences to how we live our lives and how we treat people.
